Going Green

My junior high/high school friends know that since I was a young girl, my favorite color has always been green. I was glad my high school colors were green/white. My bridesmaids wore dark green dresses. And today, there's another reason why I love the color green ... for the environment.

God entrusted this planet to us. It's vital that we each do our part to care for the environment.

Now, there's not much I can do in this part of the world (this area being dubbed an "ecological disaster" by local scientists). I haven't seen any hybrid vehicles. No organic produce to buy. And I ca
n't sort our household trash by paper, plastic and glass. But I have to start somewhere, no matter how teeny the contribution. I hang up our laundry by hand to dry (okay, I confess, this is not by choice). And here I am lugging up our groceries ... in my new "green bags!" No more plastic for me. I was thrilled to hear that some major chains in the U.S. have banned plastic bags. Good for them.

I found these bags for only 99 cents at the Wild Oats store in Memphis and I picked up a few for my grocery runs. The local checkout guys got a kick out of me asking them to use these bags ... I'll be known as the "foreigner with the green bags" in every grocery store in town. But at least I'll add a few less plastic bags to the landfills.
