When pigs fly?
Over my dead body?
In our family, we say ... "when Jenni goes camping."
To my credit, it's not that I have never tried camping ... I actually camped a lot growing up. Not only did I camp, I camped in very beautiful locations (like Pismo Beach, the Grand Canyon, etc). I just never grew to like it.
But I married an avid camper. And David has tried in vain for years to get me to go camping. And I always had a (somewhat legitimate) excuse: a young baby in tow.
However, this weekend, pigs flew (well, almost).*
Our family joined many of our friends this weekend for an overnight camping trip to a pretty spot about 2 hours away. As you can see from the photo above, the leaves were displaying their autumn best. The red, orange and yellow leaves were a welcome sight after a year of living in our crowded capital city.
Life is in full swing in the city - our Learning Center is up and running, the kids are in school, and our schedule is busy. I think our little band of friends needed this night away to regroup and reconnect before we continued on with the fall semester.
Here are a few shots of our kids enjoying their night away ... or you can also click here for a few more pictures from this weekend.
Verity is an experienced camper already, having camped a lot with her Baxis cousins in Southern California. When I told her about this trip, she threw her arms in the air and screamed, "I love camping!" This is Annalise's 2nd trip (her first was this past spring, close to the Iranian border). She also seems to love the whole idea of sleeping in tents (Help! I'm being outnumbered!) They had a great time with their friends.
they are great playmates and enjoy carpooling to
and being in the same preschool together.
in my warm pack and play. I was too distracted
to sleep. I kept my sisters awake until 10pm.
[*CONFESSION: Yes, we did go "camping." But we went to a cabin owned by another expat in this city. Because David heard that the forecast called for rain (and because I forgot to pack warm jackets for our girls), he set up our tent in the basement of this cabin. So, yes, I did sleep in a tent ... inside a cabin. Baby steps, right?]

Jen, remember in Yosemite (i dont know if it was Yosemite or Mammoth?) when the bear walked all over our station wagon? that was kewl! where was that?

Jake, that’s RIGHT, I totally forgot about that! Didn’t the bear go through all of our food, too? I can’t remember where that was, either. That was totally scary! - Jenni
Jenni, you're not alone - Lisa isn't too fond of camping, either! She's so glad to know that she is not the only one who would rather sleep on a bed than on the ground!
Hey Jenni, I can't stand camping either! Eugene loves it, but I make life miserable for him when I'm in the outdoors. Poor guy.
And I like how you conveniently *forgot* to pack warm jackets *cough cough* (just kidding!).
Anyways, Eugene wants our family to go camping together (for the first time). I, however, told him that he can go with the girls and I'll stay home & sleep in my comfortable bed!
We miss you all and love seeing all the great pics! The girls are growing up so fast.
I must admit I'm a "happy camper" but 3 nights is my limit. The love must come from having a large family and camping being the only "vacation" my parents could afford. :) But oh the memories.... Nothing beats smores and going to bed with dirty feet. :)
I LOVE it Jenni! No wonder I love you so much! I HATE camping..can't figure out what is fun about packing everything in my house, when there are perfectly good hotels and restaraunts all over the place! I'm with you though..with my slew of boys, i'm outnumbered too!
