Our Girls, the Global Nomads

Many of you have been so sweet to ask about our girls and/or mention that you are praying for them. Raising our girls overseas will have both its joys and challenges. But we're so glad we're making this move together. Though we're keenly aware of what they will miss out on in the States, we are also very excited and hopeful about all that they will gain as "global nomads."

Even if we weren't called overseas, they are already growing up with exposure to two cultures (having a Caucasian daddy and a Korean mommy). For example, our girls refused the pizza (usually a kid-pleaser) my mom ordered for them but instead devoured the rice & seaweed she brought out in its place! They are definitely big fans of Korean food! There are certain "realities" they have understood from birth that will hopefully help with this move ... like the fact that not everyone speaks the same language (my parents speak Korean around them) or that not all our loved ones live close by and they must get on an airplane to visit us (like their Nana & Papa and some of their cousins' families).

Verity (4 in August) is obviously the only daughter who is aware of what will happen on September 4th. My earliest memory is from when I was 3 1/2 - my mom called me from the hospital to let me know that my baby brother had arrived! I remember asking her to put him on the phone and feeling hurt when she said that he couldn't talk to me yet. I couldn't understand why he wouldn't want to talk to his big sister! That memory reminds me that Verity will most likely remember this move. Annalise (2) & Moriah (6 mos) will probably have no recollection of having lived in the States!

We're doing our best to answer Verity's questions and concerns. Pray for us and our parenting during this transition. We have been having great conversations with her during our bedtime routine. She is revealing the budding theologian in her as well as expressing sadness about the people she will miss. This has given us great opportunities to talk with her about the issue of obedience & blessings. We also want to be a safe family where each member can be real with all of our emotions.
